South East London

South East London stretches from SE1 down to SE20, encompassing the London boroughs of Bexley, Bromley, Greenwich, Lewisham and Southwark. Such a huge slice of the capital naturally has lots of different guises and offerings; from out-of-this-world dining scenes to riverside living and everything in between. Read on to discover developments that are rated the best places to live in South East London. In addition, read reviews from residents who own or rent in South East London.

Areas like Lambeth and Elephant & Castle have seen much in the way of regeneration. Ultra-modern residential developments are now peppered along the Thames here, packed with apartments and penthouses that come with a bird’s-eye view of the city. Both districts are now firmly seated in the ‘up-and-coming’ category, with new bars and restaurants opening up practically weekly. For celebrated old-time icons, meanwhile, Lambeth plays host to famous attractions like the National Theatre, the Tate Modern, and the Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre; so this is a real cultural big-hitter.

South East London’s gastronomy

SE1’s Borough is one of London’s most reputable foodie hotspots. You’ll find its lifeblood, Borough Market, next to London Bridge on Southwark Street. London’s biggest and best food market. It’s said to have been in operation since the 11th century, and its cornucopia of stalls feature everything from delicate French pastries to net-fresh seafood. Open Monday to Saturday, it attracts locals, tourists as well as top chefs looking for the finest produce.

Nearby Bermondsey also draws some big crowds for its gastronomic scene. Once a largely abandoned area full of run-down warehouses, today it’s a bohemian wonderland, with rainbow-coloured house fronts, quality bars and pubs and the street food extravaganza that is Maltby Street Market. Lots of the old warehouses have been converted into new-build apartments.

Historical riverside neighbourhoods

Move east to the likes of Rotherhithe and Surrey Quays and you’ll find 17th-century pubs that tell tales of days gone by; hidden down Victorian streets among swish riverfront apartment buildings. This slither of South East London offers a number of peaceful nature areas and a watersports centre. Perfect for taking a breather away from the fast-paced city day-to-day. Canary Wharf and City workers, in particular, are drawn to the area, and can commute by riverbus for a more scenic route to work.

Greenwich

In nearby Greenwich the historical sites come thick and fast. Greenwich has a fascinating maritime history, and this leafy Thames-front stretch can feel a million miles from the city. It’s a World Heritage Site, home to the Royal Observatory, the National Maritime Museum and also, the world’s most famous ship – The Cutty Sark. Property in these parts includes range from pricey waterfront apartments to smart Victorian terraces.

Edgy South East London

Neighbouring Lewisham offers an edgier lifestyle with a strong community spirit. It’s got a handful of decent markets, bars and brunch spots to rival Shoreditch and an electric after-dark offering. The Deptford neighbourhood (part of which spills into the London Borough of Greenwich) has a burgeoning art scene. As such, property developers are moving in to transform the area’s residential face with cutting-edge new apartments that appeal to the area’s multiplying creatives. Deptford High Street is packed with quirky independent stores and eateries serving Vietnamese fare. There’s also a beautiful Baroque church to explore.

Great location right next to the train station, DLR, and bus stops. High street and shopping centre around the corner and Blackheath is in walking distance.

Please review your development:

Building designed really well: it’s always quiet and well insulated/warm in the winter without having to put the heating on. Rooms are spacious and we love having a balcony. Included furnishings are also really nice and really helpful to us. Management are helpful and friendly.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Soundproofing is really good. We’ve never really heard anyone around us. However we often smell other peoples’ cooking through the venting.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Maintenance queries are responded too quickly if there’s something that needs fixing.

Fantastic location and modern, spacious flats

The location of our flat is brilliant, right next to rail station and DLR. Very easy transport links into and around London. Close to a vast number of shops, bars and restaurants. Though a busy part of lewisham, the flats are very well sound proofed so you don’t really hear other neighbours or outside environment.

Please review your development:

The building is well designed and has a nice modern finish. We are really happy with the layout of our flat. The rooms seem spacious and love using the balcony looking out to lewisham. The management side is good, any issues or questions are responded in a timely and professional manor.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

One thing we didn’t know until we moved in was how well sound proofed and insulated the flat is, very impressed. Not once have we heard our neighbours which is great! On a slight negative, we can smell the cooking of our neighbours. Could be a ventilation issue.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Yes a number of times we’ve had queries or small repairs needed on the flat and they have been delivered in a timely manor. Very grateful for the services.

Great Modern SE London Apartments

The area could not be much better – 1 min walk to the mainline train and DLR station and less than 5 mins walk into the local supermarket. Also surrounded by other great amenities such as the local cafe, pub, gyms and restaurants. It’s a little noisy currently due to building work behind the building but this is easily fixed by closing the windows as they are very good at keeping the noise out. Unfortunately there is no parking but any guests can conveniently park in the opposite supermarket for a small fee.

Please review your development:

The recently refurbished lobby maintains the modern feel of the building. The apartments are a little on the smaller side but nicely designed and allow a lot of natural light into the space so it feels nice and airy. The ventilation system is a welcome alternative to AC and helps to keep the apartment at a pleasantly warm temperature consistently. The included appliances also work great, but in the event that something goes wrong then the maintenance team will be onto this soon after it is logged on the resident’s app. Any issues we have had have been fixed quickly. The building managers quickly respond to any enquiries and keep residents up to date on any news and maintenance works in the building. They are also happy to put on resident events where it is nice to have a chat with them and other residents.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Things are closer than they seem and the area is very accessible – you can get to many places on lots of different bus and train routes and the town centre itself is only 5 mins away

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The management are very quick to respond to any issues and swiftly provide any solutions or organise repairs etc.

I am living here for 6 years naw and I would not move. The property managers are nice and very helpful. You have all the shops you need around and if you need something extra the train or DLR it’s just there.

Please review your development:

The property managers are fantastic… they help with everything and I mean everything. They go above and beyond. My apartment it’s nice and very well maintained, if I have any issues with anything it’s sorted straight away. I was allowed to transform the apartment in a home and for me was a plus. I don’t think I will move soon 😊

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

If I knew that I will be so happy living here I would moved in sooner

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The building managers responded to all your problems/issues promptly and they do whatever they can to make their tenants happy.
