Cafes and culture

Places like Islington and Stoke Newington brag a pleasing mix of hustle and bustle and green space. On Islington’s cosmopolitan Upper Street, stylish bistros line up against old-world pubs and contemporary cocktail spots. Also, the district’s Farmers’ Market was actually the first to be set up in London, launched in 1999 by food writer, Nina Planck. Today it pulls in big crowds each Sunday, with 30-plus stalls piled high with fresh produce.

Stoke Newington gives East London’s edgy postcodes a run for their money, with its vintage stores and Art Deco cinema. And close-by Highbury is sleepier than its neighbours, with a great line in gastropubs and a much-loved namesake park.

This North London area offers lots for culture buffs, too. Settle in for a dazzling performance at the Sadler’s Wells dance studio or the Almeida theatre. And in the summer, don’t miss Stoke Newington’s literary festival, dubbed ‘one of the best book bashes in the UK’ by pop culture website, The Quietus. 18th century Abney Park cemetery, one of London’s Magnificent Seven cemeteries, is another must-visit. The burial ground of famous figures such as Salvation Army Founder, William Booth, it doubles as a nature reserve and offers workshops in things like stone carving.

Nearby Finsbury Park is best-known for its 46-acre expanse of the same name. This is another creative big-hitter, thanks to the Park Theatre and a reputable performing arts centre for young people.

North London’s sports stars

Arsenal supporters can count Emirates Stadium as a neighbour in Holloway, just north of Islington’s Upper Street. This suburb has a plethora of quality pubs, which, naturally, overflow with red shirts on game days. Opt for a flat at the Drayton Park Apartments and you will be next door to the stadium, which has been rated as one of the best places to live in North London.

Move north to Tottenham, meanwhile, and brilliant days out can be had at Spurs’ home stadium on White Hart Lane. N17 is celebrated for its diversity – head to Seven Sisters Road for a conga-line of flavours – from Italian antipasti to Greek grilled meats. Or hit Seven Sisters Market for a taste of Latin America.

Old Street Stairs

Family-friendly neighbourhoods

Places like Alexandra Palace, Wood Green and Highgate have real family appeal, with good schools, leafy parks and Victorian and Edwardian housing. Highgate, in particular, offers spectacular views over the surrounding countryside, with a hilltop setting on the fringes of Hampstead Heath.

The location is absolutely fantastic!
It’s just a short 10-minute walk to King’s Cross station, which makes it super convenient for getting around. Plus, it’s a breeze to get to the Eurostar at St. Pancras from here.
There’s a bus stop right in front of the building that will take you directly to Central London!
I am absolutely thrilled to have Coal Drops Yard right on my doorstep! The area is filled with so many amazing cafes, restaurants, bars and shops, not to mention the convenience of having both Waitrose and Sainsbury’s nearby.
On the weekend, I love the charming Canopy Market! It’s a foodie’s paradise, with a wide variety of fresh and delicious food stalls, and even some amazing cocktails to try.
The canal nearby is such a lovely addition! You can take a leisurely stroll towards Camden or Islington and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

There are way better options available

Review Date Feb 2024

The place has a very modern look and appeal, the colour selection and vibrancy almost allows you to forget that you’re renting a shoe box for the price of an apartment.

Please review your development:

The facilities where not too bad it terms of looks but most didn’t work in the practical sense, the ventilation was poor almost none existent, the door is supposedly fire proof but the walls are made out of some cheap flammable materials, the washing machine makes so much noise, good luck sleeping.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

That the wifi and parking they offered was not true

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

They are way too inconsistent and do not get back to you.

King’s Cross has an excellent range of restaurants and bars. There are many cultural amenities including an Everyman Cinema. On the shopping side, as well as the usual chains such as Space NK, Sweaty Betty and Nike, there are independent cutting-edge fashion and lifestyle stores in Coal Drops Yard. The large Waitrose is in a covered market area which has weekly artisanal stalls and is great for foodies! Obviously transport links are superb with the Eurostar 10 mins away. The area feels safe always, even at night.

We’ve been residents of Author for a few months and have only positive things to say about living here. The staff were welcoming on arrival and are always professional, friendly, and helpful. The facilities and maintenance teams are proactive and responsive, often going above and beyond what’s required of them. The development has the feel of a five-star hotel. The attention to detail in the design of the communal areas is obvious and they are maintained to a very high standard. The apartments are comfortable and stylish (with a Vitsoe shelving system in the main living area) and easy to look after. We have a great view of the London skyline, and the apartment is light and airy with superb soundproofing from the triple-glazed floor-to-ceiling windows. A particular benefit of living at Author is the wonderful concierge team who have been great from day one.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Make sure you measure the size of the lift before you move in!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Emails queries always receive a timely and professional response. Issues are then resolved quickly.
