Yorkshire and the Humber

Sitting directly north of the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the Humber has a history strongly connected to the steel, coal and farming industries. Although still a major player in the UK’s energy industry, the region is still adjusting to the move towards cleaner fuels and cheap steel imports. However, Leeds is a thriving finance and business hub, while Sheffield has enjoyed a strong resurgence in recent years as a centre for the creative arts and music. Grimsby is the centre of the UK’s fishing industry, with agriculture and food processing also providing a major source of income for the region.

Where is Yorkshire and the Humber?

Yorkshire and the Humber sits directly above the East Midlands, and below the North East England region. Along with North East and North West England regions, Yorkshire and the Humber falls within the larger area known as the north of England.

What areas are in Yorkshire and the Humber?

The large county of North Yorkshire forms the northern section of Yorkshire and the Humber. Below this sits West Yorkshire and the East Riding of Yorkshire, along with York. The south of the region constitutes the counties of South Yorkshire, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire.

Yorkshire and the Humber counties

South Yorkshire

Formed of the districts of Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and Doncaster, South Yorkshire is the southernmost area within Yorkshire and the Humber. The Pennines dominate the county’s landscape, with part of the Peak District National Park lying within South Yorkshire.

West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire constitutes five metropolitan boroughs: City of Bradford, City of Leeds, Calderdale, Kirklees and City of Wakefield. Bradford, Halifax and Huddersfield were strongly connected to England’s wool industry, with much of their history and architecture dictated by it, while Leeds and the south of the county are more connected to heavy engineering industries.

East Riding of Yorkshire

The East Riding’s name comes from the traditional titles for three of Yorkshire’s smaller regions: the East, West and South Ridings. The East Riding retains the name and is bounded to the south by the Humber Estuary and to the east by the North Sea.

North Yorkshire

England’s largest non-metropolitan county, North Yorkshire is famous for the North York Moors and the Yorkshire Dales National Parks. Middlesbrough and York are its two largest urban settlements, while other key towns include Harrogate and Scarborough.

Leeds from above

North Lincolnshire

North Lincolnshire falls within the Yorkshire and the Humber region, and within the Lincolnshire county. Key towns include Scunthorpe and Epworth.

North East Lincolnshire

North East Lincolnshire is a Unitary Authority Area and falls within the Yorkshire and the Humber region. This area was formed from the boroughs of Cleethorpes and Great Grimsby in 1996.

Yorkshire and the Humber cities

The five cities in Yorkshire and the Humber are Leeds, Sheffield, Bradford, Hull, and York. Leeds is the largest, with almost 800,000 inhabitants in 2019.

Close to eccy road so lots of place to eat and drink but can be noisy on occasion on the weekends. Generally is fine though

Please review your development:

Design of the building was great and great furnishings. Having a dishwasher was a great advantage and using a stud wall to separate the living room and bedroom in a studio went a long way to making it feel more like a flat. Colour scheme was modern and not too boring either

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Tips on convenient places to park if you couldn’t afford the paid parking. I found this cost very expensive

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Parking is plentiful but a little expensive, plenty of restaurants, shops and bars nearby, close to tram and Sheffield University campus. Traffic noise is not bad, a little noise from close nightclubs sometimes.

Please review your development:

Apartment design is mostly pleasing, staff are friendly and helpful. The resident lounge and skyroom are nice spaces if a little devoid of leisure activities found in the student building. Wifi is acceptable. Communal areas – corridors, lifts, stairs, lounges are well maintained.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Annual rise of rent is something to take note of, a thorough inventory is recommended too

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Always received prompt response, friendly staff. Problems fixed quickly.
