Walthamstow on the map
It’s only 15 minutes away from Central London, but thanks to sprawling Epping Forest (which sits just to the east), Lloyds Park and the Walthamstow Wetlands nature reserve. This place can feel a world away from the city. It’s a Zone 3 suburb with Chingford to the north, Leyton to the south and Tottenham to the west. An easy commute into town is just one of its selling points.
Blackhorse Road and Walthamstow Central offer Underground and Overground trains to the likes of Euston, King’s Cross St. Pancras and the West End. And, because they’re right at the end of the Victoria line, you’re pretty much guaranteed a seat in the mornings.
The best places to buy and rent in Walthamstow
Developers are responding to Walthamstow’s changing demographic. It hasn’t seen quite the same level of regeneration as the likes of Croydon or Nine Elms. However, there are now modern apartments aplenty – freckled among the area’s traditional terraced Georgian houses.
Fizzy Walthamstow is close to Blackhorse Road station and the leafy Walthamstow Reservoirs, so it’s a fine choice if you want to combine convenience with scenery. There are one to three-bedroom apartment layouts available here, and pets are welcome in all of them. It is currently rated one of the best places to rent in Walthamstow.
“High standards and specifications. Really good quality furniture. Great service from Bobs, and a community feel with Fizzy events and coworking space.” – Anon, verified resident at Fizzy Walthamstow
“Not knowing the area, we were both sold as soon as we saw the property. Clean, modern living with a great commute into central London. The staff were brilliant, answering all our questions and helping us through the reference process. Fizzy living genuinely feels like the way moving forward. It’s great to have that one person to talk to as and when you need something.” – Martyn, verified resident at Fizzy Walthamstow
Taylor Wimpey’s Eclipse is another popular Walthamstow new-build – this one’s also just a couple of minutes’ walk from Blackhorse Road, and brags stylish, modern apartments in immaculately landscaped grounds.
“Eclipse comprises of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, all offering spacious, open-plan living. Décor is fresh and modern – think crisp white walls and spotlighting, plus there’s the option to personalise the likes of kitchen furniture, flooring and lighting while phases are ongoing. Each home comes with a balcony and ample storage space.” – HomeViews Property Pro on Eclipse
Walthamstow Gateway, meanwhile, is one of the area’s only high-rise buildings, standing tall at 11 storeys.
Things to do
With its period architecture, age-old church and quaint boutiques, Walthamstow Village has charm by the bucketload. It’s one of the most popular – and pricey – pockets in the area. Orford Road, in particular, has some lovely independent stores and restaurants that have stood for years.
Walthamstow Market is said to be the longest in Europe, and its traders line up along Walthamstow High Street for nearly a kilometre. For market wares with a roof, head to Wood Road, where there’s a duo of indoor varieties. And we can’t mention Walthamstow without nodding to one of its most well-known establishments – God’s Own Junkyard, a celebration of all things neon.
From cutesy cafés to sleek bistros, Walthamstow’s got it all when it comes to eating out. And the after-dark scene is made up of fun cocktail bars and pubs serving up craft beers, good gin and live music.
