Merseyside

Merseyside is an area in the northwest of England, bordered by Cheshire to the south and Wales to the west. Stretching across both banks of the Mersey River and centred around the bustling metropolis of Liverpool, Merseyside offers a huge range of living locations, from city-centre to semi-rural. Despite being a heavily populated and urbanised area, Merseyside does have some greenbelt areas spread throughout the county, especially in the Wirral and around Southport that offer country living right next door to the fifth-largest metropolitan area in the UK.

Where is Merseyside?

Merseyside is located in the northwest of England, bordering Cheshire to the south and Wales to the west. It comprises five metropolitan boroughs, including the City of Liverpool, which forms the heart of Merseyside, as well as Knowsley, St Helens, Sefton, and the Wirral.

Areas in Merseyside

While Liverpool might be the largest city in Merseyside, it is far from the only area of interest in the county.

Liverpool

The City Centre is full of bright lights and glitzy shops, with a large selection of restaurants that offer cuisine from all over the world. There’s also plenty going on at night including lively bars and busy live music venues for those who like their entertainment after dark.

The city was named the European Capital of Culture in 2008 and contains more galleries and national museums than any other city in the country outside of London. Perfect for your culture fix.

Evertonians will tell you there are no better pubs than those found near Goodison Park, while concert-goers can choose between two huge venues – Echo Arena or BT Convention Centre.

Knowsley

Knowsley offers a rural retreat just 20 minutes from the city centre. The borough is full of green spaces and country parks, perfect for those who love to get outdoors.

The main attraction in Knowsley is the award-winning Sudbury Hall – a stately home with extensive gardens that looks like something straight out of Downton Abbey.

St Helens

St Helens is the birthplace of poet Philip Larkin and home to Europe’s oldest horse racing track, Atherton Collieries.

The city centre is made up of a mix of quaint Victorian buildings with modern shopping centres nearby.

The area is steeped in history, with landmarks like Prescott’s medieval church and the Pemberton Clock Tower dating back to Victorian times.

Merseyside universities

As you might expect from a county that contains a major metropolitan centre like Liverpool, Merseyside is home to a number of world-class universities:

Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU)

Liverpool’s largest university after the merger of JMU and the Catholic, formerly Newman College, in 2012. It specialises in design and media; life sciences; health and social care; performing arts and events management and sport science

The University of Liverpool

One of the UK’s top research universities, it is home to a number of world-class departments including the Centre for Sustainable Chemical Technologies and the Graphene Engineering Innovation Centre.

Liverpool Hope University

Liverpool Hope University is located just outside the city and sits on top of a hill overlooking Liverpool. Liverpool Hope specialises in art and design, business, counselling and health care, education, English language teaching and international studies.

Merseyside schools

It’s not just the universities that attract students to Merseyside from all over the UK – many local schools also rank highly on national league tables. For example:

Archbishop Blanch School

Archbishop Blanch School is a Church of England secondary school for girls. In 2016, it was ranked as one of the top 100 non-selective state schools in England for GCSE results by The Telegraph newspaper.

The Blue Coat School

The Blue Coat School is a co-educational grammar school in Wavertree. In 2016, it was ranked as the top non-selective state secondary school in England for GCSE results.

Wirral Grammar for Girls

Wirral Grammar for Girls has consistently achieved some of the best A level results in North West England and regularly places at the top of the A-Level Points per Pupil area league table for Merseyside.

Population of Merseyside

The population of Merseyside is approximately 1.423 million, with around 496,784 living in the city of Liverpool.Image of the Beatles statue in Liverpool

I love it here, an amazing place to live!

Review Date Apr 2024

I have no bad aspects to report, this location is perfect. Bars, restaurants and open spaces are all a 2/3 minute walk from the building. It’s a lively city so there’s definitely noise from the streets but if you shut your window you can’t hear anything, never had a problem with the area. If you want a coffee there’s plenty of choice within 2/3 minutes, if you want open space there’s the waterfront which is down the street or there’s the terrace park which is also about 2/3 minutes away.

I love it here!
The rooms are decorated brilliantly, very homely. The building management is the best, Ellie is brilliant manager and deserves a shoutout for how welcoming, and helpful she always is. Honestly, the management and maintenance team are all great. If you’re like me and move to a new city their friendly and going the extra mile approach really helps you settle in. Couldn’t speak high enough for the team here.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

That I didn’t need to be so nervous, the entire team here are so welcoming and friendly. Communal area is also really nice and a great place to unwind! There’s free coffee which I only realised recently… oops!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Never had a problem to report and only heard good things from other tenants.

Amazing, modern place to live – perfect location

Super close to the city centre so you have loads of amazing independent cafes, bars and restaurants at your fingertips. 5 minute walk from Moorfields station and only 25 mins from Lime Street. The main street can get busy around rush hour if you need to drive through town, it’s also a bit noisy at night because it’s such a main road for emergency vehicles etc. Prince’s Dock is very quiet and always feels safe. There’s a shared bin room downstairs which never rounds out of space for your rubbish and recycling.

Please review your development:

The flats are really modern with great appliances and some more hi tech elements, though you need to work out how to use them (thermostat via the app etc). The views are obviously stunning. From the front and back of the building it feels private, though if you’re in a balcony flat you obviously do lose privacy from the side windows as there is another high rise next door.
The concierge team are second to none. They are so friendly and respond to everything really quickly, always happy to help.
The lifts do break down occasionally and the car park can get messy with rubbish (because it’s so windy!) but nothing that the property managers can help to be honest.
It’s really handy having the post lockers and the concierge will sign for parcels for you.
I’ve never used the downstairs cafe Moose as it’s super expensive.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Good – how much the concierge/property management will be willing to help you out with, I’ve never felt so lucky as a tenant! Also, the balconies are a suntrap in the summer because of the direction that they face and you get beautiful sunsets in front of your window too.
Bad – because of the building’s location it is very much a wind tunnel down our end of the docks. The flats can get noisy as wind blows through the buildings.
In the middle – the windows do all get cleaned but it’s not very often. The windows and balconies get filthy when it’s bad weather so you tend to have to live with it for a few months at a time.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Very quickly. Any requested maintenance has been organised fast and any fixes are usually sorted within a matter of days.

Great Place to Live! Amazing Location :)

Love that there is parking nearby & residents are offered a bit of a discount. They’ve just open a Sainsbury’s next door so that’s very convenient. The docks are just a 15 minute walk or so away. And Liverpool one shopping centre is close by as well. Overall an amazing location.

Please review your development:

Very modern design, which I love. Great space, lovely views and very quiet. The only thing I wish they had was maybe a rooftop area with a bit of greenery or a gym. That would just bring this amazing apartment to a 11/10 instead of a 10/10. Other than that Plaza 1821 is great!

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Wish I knew that the breakfast place downstairs was so good!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

With quickness and efficacy. Overall great customer service and building management.
