Where is Deptford?

Deptford is on the south Bank of the River Thames, a little way between historical Greenwich and bohemian Bermondsey. It shares many parallels with its neighbours – including a rich maritime heritage and a cornucopia of age-old pubs and hipster-friendly eateries. But it’s got an identity all of its own all the same.

Deptford big-hitters

Deptford High Street is regarded as one of London’s liveliest. The start of it’s marked by a giant, lopsided anchor (it was the first of the Royal Docks). Its quarter-mile stretch is home to a stunningly beautiful Baroque church and a great selection of Vietnamese restaurants, butchers and pie and mash shops. Its street market is old-school Eastend at its best. Completely devoid of organic juices and sour dough – this is noisy, wonderful bric-a-brac territory.

Not far from the high street is Deptford Market Yard – a cluster of independent stores and restaurants, huddled beneath the railway arches of Deptford station. Little Nan’s is a much-loved cocktail bar where the tipples are served in teapots. And the area is often playing host to pop-up events like art exhibitions. Speaking of which, Deptford is a hotspot for creatives, thanks to its plentiful studios, galleries and the esteemed Albany Theatre.

Deptford was named after its creek, and its Creekside Discovery Centre is a great place to take little ones. The district is also home to a handful of parks, including Brookmill Park and Deptford Park – the latter sprawls over 17 acres and boasts a children’s playground and a picnic seating spot.

New developments in Deptford

Deptford’s surge in popularity has resulted in a multitude of new apartments and houses. First-time buyers, especially, are loving Anthology’s Deptford Foundry. This smart new-build teams stylish, contemporary apartments with a selection of artists’ studios – all built on the site of an old metal foundry. Rated one of the best places to live in Deptford.

The concierge is really helpful and will accommodate any requests you may have. Overall, there aren’t any aspects which I can think of which would have improved the buying experience. Thank you Anthology, for making my first property purchase a special one!” – Ben, verified resident at Deptford Foundry

Georgia and the rest of the team made the buying experience stress free and extremely positive. As a first time buyer, they were always helpful with any queries I had, and the communication throughout the process has been excellent. The development itself is really well done, and I am extremely happy with the apartment. I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or team to help me with buying my first home.” – Ryan F, verified resident at Deptford Foundry

Union Wharf is an upcoming new-build from Build to Rent pioneer, Essential Living. Its twin towers have nabbed a prime setting overlooking Deptford Creek, and will house one, two and three-bedroom apartments. A great place to rent in Deptford!

Transport

Deptford has no Underground station to speak of, but its Zone 2 location means it’s still well-connected. From Deptford station, commuters can reach London Bridge in less than 10 minutes, Farringdon in under 20 and King’s Cross in 23. Deptford Bridge and Elverson Road are other alternatives, both of which offer direct services to Canary Wharf.

With its edgy credentials and handy London links, it’s no surprise it is having a moment in the spotlight. And while the developers are moving in thick and fast, it shows no signs of losing the character and charm it’s known for.

Nice and comfortable home and nice facilities

It is good that the facility has a nice cafe and a co-working area which is really useful when working from home. You can enjoy your coffee while working in a nice environment. It is 10 min away to New cross train station and easy to travel central London. There are trains passing, it is sometimes noisy, not a problem in winter time but it is sometimes a bit uncomfortable in summer

Please review your development:

The management is super helpful. They always solved our problems in a convenient time such as heating, or any issues at home. I would say we did not have much problem but when we have, they solved it very quickly. There is a concierge in the entrance and people working there are really helpful as well. The building also has a parcel room so you can be sure your parcel is always in a safe place waiting to be taken by you!

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

It would be good to know that the trains can be so noisy sometimes

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

As mentioned, they are really helpful and solved every problems in a timely manner

Great location with amazing transport links, cool places to eat and drink, and a beautiful riverside walk into historical Greenwich.

Please review your development:

The design of the place is beautiful, and the apartments bright and airy with some benefiting from huge industrial windows and high ceilings. Converge service, especially Akin, is 10/10- they’re so accommodating and always bring good vibes.

Downsides: the advertised facilities aren’t actually provided! There’s supposed to be weekly cinema nights which haven’t happened for 5 years, and the projector in the shared work space is constantly broken. There aren’t table tennis tables on the roof terrace anymore and we’re due to be replaced years ago but still waiting. They’ve also recently introduced no smoking on the roof terrace despite it being a totally outdoor area, which the majority or residents are unhappy about. But worst of all, the rent is increased every year by a random figure of the owners choice, with everyone in the building being charged individual rates for no apparent reason- which we discovered when we started a resident’s group to discuss the high increases.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

That the rent would be increased every year by a random percentage- this is very unsettling and doesn’t allow to pre-plan

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Pretty well, with internal flat issues being dealt with quite promptly

Greenwich is glorious all year round, and the Union Wharf building is just up the road from the Cutty Sark, the market, the park, the high street and several good restaurants.

Please review your development:

The building is well-designed and well-maintained, and has plenty of high-quality facilities, like the gym, work-from-home space, garden terrace, and parcel room. It also benefits from an on-site coffee shop. The building’s management team is responsive, organised, and helpful.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

It would have been good to hear more about how to rent out the building’s amenities and guest apartments.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The management team is friendly, highly responsive and follows through on issues raised to ensure they’re resolved.

The location is great. Greenwich is lovely, a mix of historic and new, with great pubs, museums and places to eat. And the transport links to central London are very good.

Please review your development:

The design of the apartments feel like they’ve been really been thought out, and designed around living. The facilities are very nice, making day-to-day living very pleasant, and the staff are all friendly and couldn’t be more helpful. It isn’t cheap but it may just be worth it!

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

How easy things are when compared to a more normal private landlord.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

I’ve had a few small problems after moving in, which have all been solved very swiftly by the staff with no fuss.
