Green Park London: Brief history and where to live nearby

Soldiers firing a gun in Green Park

Green Park is one of the Royal Parks of London. It is located in the City of Westminster, close to Buckingham Palace. The park was once a part of Hyde Park, but it was separated and given its own name in 1868. Green Park covers an area of just over 40 acres, and it is home to several notable landmarks, including the Wellington Monument and St. James’s Palace. If you’re looking for a new home near Green Park, there are plenty of great options to choose from, and we’ll be taking a look at some of them in this blog post.

Green Park: from humble beginnings to royal favourite

A peaceful triangle of grassland in the heart of central London, Green Park is one of the capital’s most historic royal parks. The park has existed for centuries in various guises, firstly as a royal hunting ground but also as a site for executions and a gathering place for political protests.

In its early days, the park was a swampy area on the edge of London that was known for being a haunt of thieves and other criminals. In the 16th century it was transformed into a royal deer park and in the 17th century it became a fashionable place for the aristocracy to build their homes.

In 1746, the park was opened to the public and it soon became a popular place for Londoners to stroll and take in the fresh air. The park was also used as a site for political protests and riots, and in 1848, it was the scene of a Chartist rally that turned into a violent clash with the police.

In the late 19th century, the park was redesigned and landscaped, and today it is a peaceful oasis in the heart of London. The park is home to a variety of birds and wildlife and in the spring it is blanketed with daffodils.

Interestingly, the park is one of the few in London with no formal flowerbed. Rumour has it that Charles II’s wife had them all removed when she caught him picking flowers there with another woman.

A beloved public green space

The modern Green Park has transformed into a beautiful public space enjoyed by all. It is one of the most popular parks in London, and is a great place to take a break from the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly to take a stroll or simply relax beneath its tree-lined avenues.

It’s also host to a number of events throughout the year, including an annual Easter Egg hunt, a summer concert series, and a Winter Wonderland market in December.

One of the most famous events is the Royal Gun Salutes which take place on special occasions like the Queen’s birthday. The park is also a great place to see some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, and Clarence House.
