Bromley town centre

The borough of Bromley’s principal town has benefitted from a recent facelift that saw architects Studio Egret West redesign much of the area around market Square and the High Street. The town boasts plenty of historic buildings, including the Royal Bell Hotel and Star & Garter pub.

The Art Deco Picturehouse cinema provides entertainment in elegant surroundings, while the Grade I listed Bromley and Sheppard’s Colleges is the town’s most significant historic building. Property in the town is a diverse mix of Victorian, Edwardian, pre-War and post-war housing.

Bromley has also seen a number of stylish new build homes appearing as the council focuses on developing the town’s centre. St Mark’s Square by the U+I Group is a striking development next to Bromley South station offering one and two bedroom flats for sale from £380,000.

Flats are very modern and are built to a high spec with nice views. It is cleanly kept and the concierge is really good but the recycling is poor. The security is always available. It is easy to access by public transport but the trains are noisy.

I love how beautiful my apartment looks, especially when it’s sunny. It has beautiful huge windows and the view from my balcony is just stunning. The facilities include: concrete, lift, bike storage and car park. I can also just pop downstairs to the cinema and watch the latest hit.

The larger Trinity Village development by Barratt Homes is a scheme comprising over 500 apartments ranging from one to five bedrooms in size. Residents praise the build quality of the development and the transport links from nearby Bromley South station.

The area overall is very good due to the great transport links present within the area as well as a park over the road which is great for kids. The development is also very clean and extremely safe.

I love this area! The community around the development is great and the accessibility to transport and local amenities is very useful. The shops around the area are nice and close which makes shopping trips very convenient. Having lived in the area for several years, I have found no downsides to this lovely development.

Living in Bromley

Roughly half of Crystal Palace sits within the borough of Bromley, including the park and area to the south of the Triangle. The historic park offers beautiful open green spaces as well as the National Sports Centre, a maze and the ruins of the famous glass house complex from which the park gained its name. Historic terraced properties sit alongside more modern options, such as Venue by Fairview New Homes slightly to the south in Anerley.

Great value for money in a superb location and vibrant neighbourhood. It’s in a very quiet residential area which is great. The flat is spacious and the fitted kitchen and appliances are great quality. There is a playground and communal courtyard for residents to enjoy some green space.

Other major residential areas in Bromley include Penge, Hayes, Orpington and Beckenham. While most of the borough’s residents live in the most populated areas to the north, Biggin Hill is the most populated settlement in the south of the borough.

Green spaces

Being semi-rural, the borough of Bromley offers plenty of green space for walking, dog-walking and general exploring. When it comes to parks, Crystal Palace is the largest in the borough. However, High Elm Country Park and Scadbury Park nature reserves are even larger, offering wilder open spaces, while Hoblingwell Wood in St Paul’s Cray offers 201 acres of woodland for locals to enjoy.

Priory Gardens and Riverside Gardens in Orpington provide smaller park areas, while nearby Goddington Park offers areas of woodland with sports areas. Hayes Common is one of London’s largest areas of common land, offering heath and parkland crisscrossed by trails.

Transport

Bromley is one of the few London boroughs not to be served directly by the Underground system. However, Overground services extend down to Crystal Palace and Penge East/West. Thameslink, Southeastern and Southern Rail services serve the rest of the borough, along with five Tramlink stops connecting through into Croydon.

Bromley celebrities

Author H.G. Wells was born in Bromley in 1886. His father was the founder of Bromley Cricket Club and ran a sports good store in the town. Other notable residents of Bromley include David Bowie, Charles Darwin, Fatboy Slim, Billy Idol and novelst Hanif Kureishi.

St Mark’s is a great space to live/work/play!

So great being close to the shops and transport links are amazing with busses running and Bromley South station just opposite. Really close to bars so it’s great for socialising. Parking is all underground for the building which is a huge bonus. There is a bin room so you can pop your rubbish in whenever suits and you don’t have to worry about missing collection day. Sometimes the area can get a bit noisy, but it’s never for too long and shutting the windows/doors means you can’t hear anything.

Please review your development:

Really modern building and the flats are very spacious. The shared areas are kept clean and tidy (where we pick up post/lobby area) and it’s great having the option of the lift if you have heavy items to carry up. Sometimes the lifts can be out of order but generally they get fixed pretty quickly.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

It can get quite hot in the summer so bring a fan! But other than that we’ve had a really great experience here and it’s so handy to be so close to all the shops.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

There have been a few times the lift has been out of service but they have fixed it pretty quickly. Staff are also really helpful with post and if we need meter readings they are really helpful.

St Mark’s Square – overall a great choice

Excellent location, right next to Bromley South station. Direct commute to Victoria.
The area has 5 different supermarkets, an amazing shopping mall, a massive park and lots of different shops in Bromley square.

Please review your development:

24h concierge. Difficult location to move due to limited street access to the building. Very clean area. Quite well protected as police station is right next to it.
Building management is good, 2 operating lifts and very well maintained. Lift access with a fob, which is extra protection.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Wish I read more that after 1 year you pay for all apartment problems.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Quickly and responsive. Sometimes it’s difficult to connect you to the right people and to find the original furnishing/units when replacement is needed.

Perfect development for commuters to london looking for the best of both worlds!

We live about 5 minutes away from the nearest train station, which has direct links to London Victoria, which is very convenient. We’re also very close to our high street, which has pretty much everything you could want. Bromley also has a great range of local pubs and restaurants, we’ve been here for two years and we still haven’t tried them all.

Parking can be a bit difficult, but we were lucky enough to get a parking space with our rental, which has been very helpful, as street parking can be hard to find. We live by the main road, and a few pubs, so there is definitely street noise, but it’s never really been a problem as we have good double glazing so we don’t hear anything with the windows closed. We’ve seen a few people have run-ins with the local police, but we’ve never felt unsafe in our flat. The area is generally very nice, with lots to do and lots of open spaces nearby.

Please review your development:

We’ve been living in our one bed flat for just over two years, and we’re still very happy here. The area is perfect, as we’re close to local transport links, green spaces and the high street has everything you need. The overall design of the building is nice to look at and has a nice square in the middle, which is lined by a cinema and a few nice restaurants. The concierge team is absolutely wonderful and has always been extremely helpful. Especially during lockdown when we were getting a lot of parcels to pass the time! I’d like to shout out to Namory in particular, as he always goes above and beyond to help residents, and he’s always so kind and friendly.

The property management is where I say this development falls down, sometimes it can take a long time to get a reply from someone about an issue and when you do, you can end up being passed around to several people until you actually get an answer. But generally, they are helpful, it can just be a bit of an ordeal getting a response.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I think this is something most people know to consider, but because we’re new renters we were a bit novice to it all. But, check how much sun you get on your balcony before moving in. We have a lovely balcony but we don’t get very much sun at all, which can be a shame but we still enjoy it. I’d also recommend getting a parking space if you can, this area doesn’t have the best street parking, so it’s worth checking out.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The building management team can be a bit slow on responses, which at times has been frustrating. But we have got all of our concerns and issues fixed, so they have been okay overall. Our landlord is absolutely lovely and really has done the most to make us feel supported and welcome in the flat.
