Where is Rotherhithe?

South of the River Thames, encompassing Surrey Quays and Canada Water, and also close to café-mad Bermondsey. Rotherhithe sits sandwiched between two sprawling green spaces – Southwark Park and Stave Hill Ecological Park.

SE16 highlights

It’s hard to believe you’re just a hop from central London here. The area is patchworked with marinas and nature reserves, and the scenic Thames Path is a haven for walkers.

Down the cobbled backstreets, Victorian pubs stand unchanged, offering traditional ales and quality food. Rotherhithe’s most famous resident is The Mayflower. The oldest pub on the Thames, it brags river views and a roaring fire in winter. It’s usually bathed in candlelight and the pie of the day is famous, naturally served with gravy-soaked mash.

The Brunel Museum is a homage to engineering – in particular, the family behind great feats like the Thames Tunnel, the colossal SS Great Eastern ship, and the Great Western Railway. Head down to the underground chamber beneath the museum to catch regular concerts and theatrical performances with superb acoustics. And up to the rooftop to sip cocktails made with ingredients from the museum’s garden.

Rotherhithe transport links

If you like the idea of commuting on the river, you can catch the Thames Clipper water taxi from Hilton Docklands and Greenland Dock, or follow the waterfront cycle path.

Rotherhithe, Canada Water as well as, Surrey Quays all have Overground stations providing fast and direct connections to the likes of Whitechapel and Shoreditch.

Canada Water has a Zone 2 Underground station with links to Canary Wharf and Westminster via the Jubilee line.

Top rated developments in the area

Development in the Rotherhithe area began back in the Eighties, swiftly followed by a big bout in the Nineties. And, in recent years, the property bigwigs moved in again.

Galliard Homes and Berkeley Homes wanted a piece of the action, bringing us Marine Wharf East and Marine Wharf West. Both developments have enviable transport links close-by, and are surrounded by well-tended greenery. These are currently rated as some of the best places to live in Rotherhithe, according to HomeViewers reviewers.

“The apartment types vary across the different buildings within the development, we have been tenants in two separate buildings now, and both were very nice, modern and afforded us plenty of living space with wonderful views of Canary Wharf. The location is perfect for city commuters with a short walk to both Surrey Quays and Canada Water Stations.” – Ben, verified resident at Marine Wharf West

Additionally, Porter’s Edge, by Sellar, is another top rated development to buy or rent in Rotherhithe as it offers a range of onsite facilities, including shops, a cinema and a health and fitness centre.

“Overall, the development is amazing, not much to complain about. The concierge I believe is 24 hrs, they have a gym and there’s also access to the sport pitch which you can book. The rooms are a good size and quality is really good as well.” – Anonymous, verified resident at Porter’s Edge

Greenland Place is a huge scheme from Barratt London, with studios, apartments and houses paired with a business centre and nursery, all spread across multiple buildings.

Another Barratt London development is Maple Quays offering, with several low buildings surrounding a central tower filled with luxury apartments.

“Amenities on doorstep. Good transport links, overground and underground. Shops, big Tesco, restaurants. Good walks with the river right there.” – Anonymous, verified resident at Greenland Place

I have a great communal garden, which my child can enjoy. The apartment feels very modern and spacious. My living room is my favourite room in the house and it has a lot of light. I have had no issues with the parking as we have underground parking.” – Bob, verified resident at Maple Quays

Similarly, London Square Canada Water is popular with Canary Wharf professionals – an immaculately designed property with manicured gardens.

“No high-rise building to block amazing views of the docks and the rest of London, fantastic that we are currently in zone 2 but it’s like we are in a quiet countryside environment.” – Eva, resident at London Square Canada Water

In addition, are you seeking a new home for your furry friend? Unusually for the area, pets are welcome at Quebec Quarter, an attractive, low-rise development by L&Q.

“Architecture of building is very good, the apartments are well structured and strategically laid out, and the neighbours are nice. There’s a shop at the entrance, very good concierge, efficient with deliveries.” – Jandon, verified resident at Quebec Quarter

Good – well-maintained, close to river and metro

Please review your development:

Ball games are not allowed in the communal garden. However a group of kids disobey such rules and they play ball games in the park almost every evening, and disturb peace & quiet for the others. Issue has been reported several times but it still continues to happen.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Avoid if you are looking for a quiet place.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The conceriege is helpful but problem still persists

High quality flat in a good location.

A lot of young professionals live here but there aren’t many restaurants/bars locally. You are so close to Southwark Park and Stave Hill which are great benefits. Lot’s of travel options out of the area too + we just got Boris bikes.

Please review your development:

Overall, the flat is to a high standard and property management is attentive. However, there are a few issues. The main one is that noise from upstairs flats can be quite horrendous as you can hear every tiny footstep. It’s true that you don’t hear flats to the side of you but trying to sleep with banging upstairs can be frustrating. Another thing is the blinds in the lounge and non-bedrooms don’t block the light so on a hot day working from home it’s annoying. If you can get a flat on the top floor I’d still recommend this place, though.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

There’s bike storage! No one seems to use it but it’s there. I’d also just reiterate the point about noise from upstairs neighbours.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Mostly well. I did once have broken washing machine which they didn’t get round to for 2 weeks but aside from that it’s been good.

The local area is very disappointing. Not many local pubs, restaurants or shop.
There is only 1 big supermarket and is always crowded.
The area is plenty of development and is very over-populated

Please review your development:

The development is newly built but apparently has a lot of problems. There is always some kind of maintenance work around all buildings in development.
Fire alarm is faulty and it made a lot of false alarm ( even during the night )

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

If I knew L&Q was so bad as landlord/management, I’d not move here

What is the best feature of your home:

House is new, so means I was the first one moving in.
Flat had a lot of space and storage
