Where is North East England?

North East England is the northernmost region in the country, stretching up above Yorkshire and the Humber right up to the border of Scotland. The cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Sunderland and Durham lie towards the south of this region.

North East England counties

Northumberland

The northernmost county in England, Northumberland stretches high up the Northumberland coast, past Holy Island and Lindisfarne to the Scottish border. Wild and largely unpopulated, Northumberland has been the site of many historic battles and boasts more castles than any other county in England.

Tyne and Wear

The metropolitan county of Tyne and Wear gains its name from being situated at the mouths of the Tyne and Wear rivers. Most of the population of North East England lives within this small county, whose major landmarks include the Angel of the North sculpture and the Tyne Bridge.

County Durham

The city of Durham is this county’s main town, although the largest urban area in the county is Darlington. Much of the North Penines can be found within this county, with Hamsterly Forest also providing residents with a popular recreational area.

North Yorkshire (in part)

Part of North Yorkshire falls within the North East England region. These local authority areas are Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar and Cleveland, and Middlesborough.

North East England cities

The three cities in North East England are Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Sunderland. Key towns include Gateshead, Middlesborough, Darlington and Hartlepool.
