The first phase of the development which has been completed a while ago is showing signs of deterioration quite quickly. There are are parts of it which look decidedly run down already. The second stage of the development where I live is pretty complete but road surfacing has still not been finished. The third stage is built on what was a field to the north of the estate and I think that’s a shame as it encroaches on countryside.
The design and build quality of the housing is average – little innovative thought. Still putting in gas central heating in new properties – I live in a bungalow – which belongs to a housing association and I am generally pleased with it, but the basic standard of fixture and fittings in the kitchen are cheap. I know that is the Housing Association’s choice but…
Phase 2 backs on to what were post war council estates. Some of these are OK – and now mainly owner occupied, but one particular street is the cause of some anti social behaviour. I have had to engage with community police to address issues with youth nuisance. There are drug dealers in areas close by and there have been two murders.
The estate is attracting a diverse number of buyers some from BAME backgrounds, and other places away from the traditional mining area that Thurnscoe was. There has been some tension as a result, and residents from ethnic minorities seem to want to keep themselves to themselves and not attempt to integrate with the community, and, I am sure they may experience some hostility to them from some people which may be a cause of this.
Please tell us what you like and dislike about this area:
There are no facilities on the development itself except for an open space and children’s playground. The main access to the site is from a street that has cars parked on both sides. It’s close to local facilities a short walk away in Thurnscoe nad there are bus links and the railway station is a short walk.
Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:
Proximity to some areas with social problems can cause issues. However it is close to beautiful countryside and has good amenities nearby.
