Interesting story behind these flats

This place has a really interesting history – it was the British Steel HQ, then the home of sixties’ music label Decca Records (for anyone who remembers!). Now it’s mostly residential flats except for the supermarket on the ground floor and the Garton Jones estate agent. The penthouses are the piece de resistance, but the standard apartments are pretty special too. The one I viewed faced the river, and I’d definitely recommend a Thames view. If you’re going to live on the South Bank, you’d be crazy not to!

A riverside development with bags of history, 9 Albert Embankment is a South Bank favourite

Albert Embankment stretches along the South Bank of the Thames, from Lambeth Bridge down to Vauxhall Bridge. The 9 Albert Embankment development – one of many residential properties on this popular stretch – looks out over the river, with Lambeth in one direction and Vauxhall in the other.

9 Albert Embankment was originally built in the 1960s, but you wouldn’t think it today. Redeveloped by Berkeley Homes in 2002, it now houses more than 200 modern flats plus several impressive penthouses and duplex apartments. The building has 13 storeys at its highest point and includes selected commercial properties – including an estate agent – on the lower floor. Residential properties are available both to buy and to rent.

Flats at 9 Albert Embankment range from one-bedroom properties with open-plan kitchen and dining rooms, to spacious duplex penthouses – the most exclusive of which feature three spacious bedrooms and full-height patio doors that lead onto a private, wraparound balcony. Properties at the front of the building offer widescreen views over the River Thames and the ever-changing London skyline. Plus, there’s a sheltered and sunny courtyard area that’s shared by all residents.

The development offers additional convenient features including secure underground parking, a 24-hour concierge service, a lift and an on-site shop – Embankment Grocery. It also benefits from good transport links – Vauxhall Station is the closest Underground station at half a mile away, and Pimlico Underground station isn’t much further. There are excellent bus links, and – with the Riverbank Park Plaza Hotel next door – there’s always a taxi ready to whisk you off into London.

There are plenty of reasons to stay closer to home, though, thanks to the development’s riverside location. Follow the river south-west and you’ll reach the Nine Elms area – an emerging hub of upmarket residential properties, businesses and cultural attractions that will soon have its own Underground station. Cross Vauxhall Bridge to explore north of the river, meanwhile, and you’ve got the areas of Pimlico, Westminster and Victoria to explore.

Experience of living in a central London flatshare

Verified Resident

The building is modern and secure with a 24/7 concierge desk available to receive deliveries during the day which is convenient. The development is well located for central London, within walking distance of local amenities such as shops, bars, restaurants and tube station. For the location and size of flat it is good value for money. The main downside is that the walls separating the different flats are thin and so noise can travel leading to issues/complaints between neighbours.

Please tell us what you like and dislike about this area:

The location is central and very well connected within easy reach of much of Central London both on foot and via the tube. Traffic can be quite congested and slow, there is also a fair amount of noise from the streets.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Get to know your neighbours so that if there are any issues re noise or anything similar, it can be resolved amicably and respectfully.
