Living in Barnet

Whether you’re looking for a vibrant, energetic place to live within easy reach of Central London, or you prefer life at a more stately pace close to the countryside, Barnet has something for you. At its southern edge, the borough has the lively communities of Brent Cross and Golders Green. Meanwhile, in Chipping Barnet, Barnet Town and Barnet Gate, you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re outside the M25.

Barnet’s central and northern areas are littered with nature reserves, open spaces and golf courses. This creates a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere that belies Barnet’s proximity to Central London. Additionally, the rolling Hertfordshire countryside is close at hand. Even in more central areas, green space is plentiful thanks to the nearby Hampstead Heath and Golders Hill Park.

Barnet offers a choice of different areas for shopping and leisure. Brent Cross Shopping Centre has a range of popular retailers and department stores. Additionally, the communities of Finchley, North Finchley, Edgware and Barnet town all have thriving high streets. Getting around Barnet

Barnet is one of London’s largest boroughs. The area is the fourth largest of any borough in London, to be precise. As such, there are four TfL transport zones covering the borough. At the south of the borough, you’re in Zone 3, while when you reach the northernmost point in Barnet you’re all the way up in Zone 6.

The London Underground serves Barnet well, with two branches of the Northern Line terminating in the borough at Zone 5’s High Barnet and Edgware. Mainline rail also has a strong presence across Barnet, with stations at Hendon, Mill Hill Broadway, New Barnet and Oakleigh Park. The M1, A1 and A406, three of London’s busiest and best-connected highways, also pass through Barnet.

Is property expensive in Barnet?

According to Zoopla, Barnet’s average property price in the year to August 2023 was £705,000. This is in the same ballpark as the London average of £723,000. Barnet’s larger, detached houses sell for more than the London average, at £1,348,000 compared to £1,302,000. However, terraced houses and apartments in Barnet are significantly cheaper than the London average (£589,000 for a terraced house and £382,000 for an apartment, compared to £813,000 and £523,000). This makes Barnet a more viable choice than much of London for first-time buyers, young professionals and new families.

Also, don’t forget that UK house prices are due for a further drop in late 2023. This means that you might find more affordable prospects on the Barnet property market in the near future.
