Getting around is fairly easy too. The A1/A1 (M) runs from London right through the North East counties on its way to Edinburgh. Here, you’ll also find a Metro service connecting Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and the City of Sunderland.
Meanwhile, the east-to-west A66 provides a straightforward route to the Yorkshire Dales and the Lake District. Travelling abroad? Newcastle International Airport – the largest in the North East – offers flights to 80 destinations.
North East England property prices
So, how do prices in the North East compare with the rest of the country? Data from Zoopla for the 12 months to August 2023 revealed that the average cost for a home here was £212,000.
This is much cheaper than the average for the North West (£243,404). County Durham came out the cheapest location overall, while at £236,000 while Northumberland homes cost the most. However, prices are still well below the June 2023 England-wide average of £306,000.
Last year, most sales centres around terraced properties, averaging £150,000. Meanwhile, semi-detached homes went for around £200,000, with detached properties achieving £377,000.
