Where is North East England?

Living in North East England

Stretching from the border of Scotland to the North Pennines AONB and with a beautiful coastline forming its eastern border, North East England’s landscape is certainly varied. It’s home to around 2.7 million inhabitants, primarily settled in the urban centres of Tyneside, Wearside and Teesside. In particular, the cities of Newcastle upon Tyne, Durham and Sunderland act as the region’s major hubs.

The northernmost county, rugged Northumberland joins the Scottish border and shares much of its culture. Head into the National Park, which encompasses Hadrian’s Wall, Kielder Forest and the Cheviot Hills, to enjoy the area’s serene beauty and history.

Lying beneath Northumberland, Tyne and Wear is named after the rivers it surrounds. It features a lighthouse-studded coastline offering miles of waterside walks and bike rides, while Newcastle is known for its club and restaurant scene.

In County Durham, you’ll discover a cathedral city founded by a group of monks from Lindisfarne. The county also has impressive walking routes and open wild spaces, such as the North Pennines and Hamsterley Forest. A slice of North Yorkshire also falls within the boundaries of North East England.
