Living in Tower Hamlets – London’s most colourful quarter

Tower Hamlets is a borough of contrasts. Next to the sleek offices of Canary Wharf you’ll find areas of high urban privation and poverty. However, Tower Hamlets continues to undergo a massive transformation that’s turning even its most deprived regions into sought-after locations.

Wherever you go in this borough you’ll find it bursting with culture and history. From the Hackney Empire Theatre to the Jack the Ripper tours of Whitechapel, there’s no shortage of stories to explore.

There’s also a great (and growing) culinary scene here. Whitechapel has a bevy of fantastic curry houses, while Bethnal Green is attracting all manner of stylish independent eateries. Canary Wharf is also developing a solid reputation for great dining options ranging from up-market chain outlets to Michelin-starred restaurants.

As for transport, Tower Hamlets is very well connected to the rest of the capital. The north side of the borough has the Central, Hammersmith & City and District lines close at hand. The south, meanwhile, has the DLR and Circle. The whole borough is well served with Overground, bus and riverbus links.

Average property prices in Tower Hamlets

There’s a wide range of property types and prices available in Tower Hamlets. From smart apartments in Canary Wharf, to terraced houses in Bromley, there are good options to suit most budgets.

In the 12 months to October 2023, the average price of property sold in Tower Hamlets was £628,082. Prices range widely from this average, depending on what district you’re looking in.

Surprisingly, it’s not that cheap to rent in Tower Hamlets. The average rental rate for the E14 postcode is £3,000 per calendar month. This is comparable to the London average of £3,240. However, this average is partially due to the rapid rise of rents in Canary Wharf.
