Stonehenge in Wiltshire

Where is Wiltshire?

Wiltshire is located in the southwest of England and borders Gloucestershire, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire and Berkshire. The county town is Trowbridge, but there are also plenty of other towns and villages to explore.

Areas in Wiltshire

There are many different areas in Wiltshire to consider when looking for property. Some of the most popular include:

Salisbury Plain – covering an area of around 300 square miles, this is Wiltshire’s largest green belt and has long been used for military training exercises due to its remoteness from towns or roads. There are many interesting sites in Salisbury Plain including Stonehenge, Vespasian’s Camp, Old Sarum and the Long Barrow.

Tisbury – this village is well known to history buffs as it was once home to King Alfred the Great whose family estate included land in Tisbury during his lifetime. The original Saxon church can still be seen today at St Mary’s Church which dates back to over 900 years ago.

Trowbridge – located in the north of Wiltshire, Trowbridge is one of the county’s most important towns. Formerly an industrial town, it is now home to a variety of businesses and shopping centres. The Kennet and Avon Canal also runs through the town.

Stourhead Park in Wiltshire

Littlecote – this is a more modern addition to Wiltshire’s history as it was first mentioned in records dating back only around 900 years ago. The manor house of Littlecote Park has its origins dating back to 1250 and can be seen on the cover of Agatha Christie’s novel “They Do It With Mirrors.”

It has been used as a backdrop in television shows such as Doctor Who, Casualty and Midsomer Murders.

Salisbury – this is one of the oldest cities in England with its origins dating back to around 4000 years ago which makes it older than Stonehenge itself! Salisbury Cathedral dominates the city’s skyline.

Salisbury also hosts several festivals throughout the year including an annual Christmas Craft Market and Food Festival; there is even a Beerfest that takes place every August!

Universities in Wiltshire

Wiltshire is home to two universities. The University of Bath Spa is located in the town of Bath while the University of Wiltshire is based in the city of Chippenham.

The University of Bath Spa – This university has been awarded Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) and is ranked as one of the top universities in the UK for employability.

The University of Wiltshire – This university offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses, with many modules being available online or via distance learning. It also has strong links with businesses in the region, so it is a popular choice for students looking to study for business and management degrees.

Sailsbury Cathedral in Wiltshire

Top Schools in Wiltshire

Wiltshire has a number of top schools including Oakfield School and Sherborne House School which both achieved an “Outstanding” rating from Ofsted.

Oakfield School – Oakfield School is an independent co-educational day and boarding school, which sits in 200 acres of parkland on the outskirts of Maidenhead.

Sherborne House School – Sherborne students achieve consistently high standards at GCSE, with over two-thirds achieving A* to B grades in 2020. The school has a long-standing commitment to music and was named ‘Music College of the Year’ by Ofsted for 2018.

Population of Wiltshire

The Population of Wiltshire is 470,981 according to the latest figures from the Office for National Statistics. Wiltshire is one of the most rural counties in England and has a population density of just 87 people per square kilometre.

Tadpole Garden Village

Good – lovely open spaces, at least 3 parks and fields leading to river. Great coffee shop, barbers and hairdressers and Sainsburys. Great community spirit – lots of events put on such as allotment open days with stalls and produce, Remembrance Sunday service, litter picks, carol singing. Good Primary and secondary schools.

Bad – parking not great. Huge 5 bed houses with drive way space for 2 cars for example. Lots of cars parking on main roads means rush hour and school drop off/pick is horrendous. For a huge estate it still feels quite spacious compared to Red House/Oakhurst for example – wide roads and houses not on top of each other.
Strange design/layout in some areas for example a neighbour can’t get their wheelie bin out of their garden easily as they have to go up a step. My house has a pretty poor finish.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I wish I had know there was such a thing as professional snaggers, and that shared ownership owners only have a 1 year warranty (not sure that is the right word) to raise defects. (‘normal’ homeowners have longer than 1 year to raise defects)

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Very very slow to act – gave up on chasing many things.

Somerbrook 16 months in

We really enjoy living at Somerbrook. The development is in a rural village, which is very quiet but everyone we have met has been lovely. The local pubs, post office and allotments are the highlights!

Please review your development:

The development is nicely designed, I still think it is one of best looking new builds I have come across. The site is starting to mature quite well, some of the trees did not survive long but I hope that these will be replaced. Recently had lots of rain and not experienced any flooding so drainage seems to be fine. Not had any experience of dealing with the management company yet so can’t comment on that.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I wish we asked more questions about the garden as the soil quality was quite poor and the turf has taken a lot of attention to get it going.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

The snagging list was quite long but it has all been sorted now. Most of it was done to a high standard but somethings took months longer than they should have.

The good aspects of living within Somerford is the local shop and post office . There is also a local pub which is friendly and offer good quality reasonable priced food and drinks. There is also a school near by with Malemsbury only 9 minutes from the village. The village has minimal traffic passing by and the only noise is of animals which is comforting and safe. t

Please review your development:

The design of the property is amazing. The layout of the home is spacious and designed brilliantly.
The laundry room is what really us the property, you do not see many of these features anymore and it makes the home feel bigger and somewhere for white goods to be.
The size of the downstairs bathroom is really accessible.
The size of the windows in the property make the house feel clean, spacious and luxurious.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

Ensure all emails regarding defects are recorded as there has been confusion around outstanding defects.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

We have raised defects with the property and some of these were completed efficiently. However we still have ongoing pending defects since moving in October 2021.
However its easy to communicate with them to get updates. There was an incident were someone was coming around to look at final defects however myself and my fiancé work full time. We tried to re-arrange but this was not applicable and we missed out on the viewing of defects.

Won’t take responsibility

Beautiful area and a great community, overall we have a lovely home that we love however we have had to push a side alot of damage to our property from builders rushing and not doing a good job
We have lived in our home for 5 years and still are waiting for soverign to fix ours issues
Roads are slowly getting better but have been awful for years, the roads are far too narrow and is not idea for a busy community coming in and out all the time
Car are forced to stop to let people through first
And I can’t imagine what emergency services would go through if they had to get some someone’s quickly
It is awful on bin day as bin lorries are just too big and they block the road ( not there fault)
Since living here we have had no problems from anti social behaviour and has some lovely neighbours

Please review your development:

Rubbish, rush building the houses and don’t finish them or don’t do things properly
Don’t like to take responsibility for there mistakes and refuses to fix them even when still in warranty
Been waiting 5 years and still fix my issues even with complaint after complaint even with threats of court action against them

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

How unreliable soverign Is and wish I didn’t go for a new build!

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Won’t take responsibility and bounce my problems back and forth from soverign to bovis
