Getting to and from Poplar

Poplar station is on the DLR; offering commuters fast and frequent services to the likes of Canning Town, Bank and Stratford. The Blackwall Tunnel, meanwhile, offers drivers easy access to and from London. And soon, Crossrail will arrive, improving the transport links further.

What’s it like?

A largely residential area, most of Poplar was destroyed in World War II, but the developers have moved in and the area is getting more than just a new lick of paint.

Aberfeldy New Village is a work-in-progress neighbourhood from EcoWorld and Poplar Harca – a mix of studios and apartments surrounded by green spaces, with top facilities.

“I moved into Aberfeldy new village complex a month ago and I am very happy with my flat. The flat is light, airy and spacious. General look and finish of the flat is good too. The complex itself is green and spacious. Concierge, gym, media room are all good facilities and are well-maintained.” – Prajwal, verified resident at Aberfeldy New Village

Build to Rent development Fizzy Poplar offers a superb view of the Canary Wharf skyline, welcomes pets and is close to the famous Chrisp Street Market… This development has been rated one of the best places to live in Poplar.

“Best experience ever! High quality build, friendly and very helpful staff, pet friendly and at an amazing location!” – B Sabeva, verified resident at Fizzy Poplar

“This is the second Fizzy building we’ve lived in. I can safely say we wouldn’t want to live anywhere else, thanks to the incredible quality of service and living standard afforded to us. Our property manager, Tia, is fantastic. She is always so helpful and friendly.” – Flynn B, verified resident at Fizzy Poplar

More than 500 new homes have been created at New Festival Quarter, a contemporary scheme with its own shops and community centre, plus a lovely rooftop terrace.

“My experience with this development has been wonderful, I couldn’t have any more positive words to say about it. Area is very quiet which I like and the tube station is very close which enables me to travel to anywhere I like.” – A M, verified resident at New Festival Quarter

Fairview New Homes’ Pheonix is a popular Poplar development close to Langdon Park DLR station. Close by is Equinox, a Bellway Homes development with views over Langdon Park, and another Bellway property, Lansbury Square.

“It’s got a great design to it and it’s safe for the children but I wish that there was a GP near the area. I like the building management here, really liked the service from the landlord. Overall lovely experience here.” – Helger, verified resident at Pheonix

“Great concierge, clean and fantastic location by the river and dlr station. Minutes to Greenwich. 25 mins walk to Canary Wharf.” – Jelly300, verified resident at Equinox

“I’ve been living here 2 years now, I’ve bought the place and have had no regrets since. The apartment is the perfect size for me since I’m a single resident. My bedroom is very spacious and so is the living room. The building management are always responding to me on time and even better the concierge, they’re friendly and we all get along. My neighbours are all professionals and never disturb us either. I find everything relatively close to me, like the station and Tesco/co-op is only 6 minutes’ walk!” – Julie, verified resident at Lansbury Square

Things to see and do in Poplar

Poplar’s most famous resident is Chrisp Street Market – not just a market, but actually the heart of the district, encompassing 80 stalls, a selection of shops, a few pubs, and a clock tower that presides over it all.

Poplar High Street and East India Dock Road provide the biggest concentration of shops and restaurants, and you’ll find some fabulous independents here that have been in families for generations. Poplar has a good sprinkling of proper pie and mash shops (this is the East End, after all), traditional boozers tucked down side streets, and contemporary gastropubs on the river.

Lacing through Poplar’s urban estates are two waterways; the Limehouse Cut and the River Lea, providing peaceful walks away from the busy centre. Green spaces, meanwhile, come in the form of Barlett Park, Langdon Park and Poplar Recreation Ground.

Enjoy living here. There are kind people and I have a great sized, newly furnished apartment

The quality of shops, restaurants and bars in my area is below average. My surrounding area is up and coming and some of it looks broken down. I am not too happy about that. However, there are perks to my area such as, Bartlett Park, and a nice cafe located across the way at the end of the park. Transportation is within walking distance if you don’t mind walking 7-15 minutes to bus or train. Overall, I would like there to be more stores and restaurants close by and the surrounding area needs to be cleaned up and rebuilt. It is an eye sore.

Please review your development:

Personally, I feel that Fizzy Poplar can be updated quite a bit. The carpets in the hallways are dirty and have an odor to them, the walls and doors need to be repainted, and air fresheners should be distributed throughout the halls and lobby. I enjoy that there is a residence gym located in our complex and it is just about 2 minutes walking distance from our lobby. However, this place would benefit from a concierge at the front desk. Not just at the Moro house location. Maintenance is good and comes when needed in a timely manner. It was a disappointment to learn that there was no co-working space or lounge area at this location. Overall, it could be cleaner and could use a few updates and additions.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I wish I had none more about the surrounding area (condition of living, lack of shops/restaurants, broken down housing).

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Building management has always responded quickly and provides an efficient solution to any issues that arise.

Manager Response

Hi Kristi,

Thank you for your review, we appreciate your comments on how we can better and update our current building and this has all been noted.

Very quiet area near the park

Review Date Nov 2023

Very quiet area. Nice having the park near us. Easy access to the DLR which can bring you to the City of London. Canary Wharf is a short walk to restaurants, bars and shops.

Please review your development:

The development is clean and they do a good job ensuring this. Everyday cleaners are vacuuming or mopping. The gym is nice but a bit small. It is a clean gym and additional conscience of local stores and dry cleaners right near by. Barbershop is also around the corner. Good location.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I moved internationally and it went well but wish I need the little things that was need for a international resident coming in.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

They are very quick when repairs need to be made. I also trust for maintenance to come in and make their fixes even when I’m not home.

Good location but some areas in the neighbourhood are very dodgy. Close to shops, tube and DLR.
No parking available as it is a car free development which is very annoying.

Please review your development:

Good location and close to amenities. Basic gym and concierge( no pool or sauna and gym lacks some basic equipments such as a bench and a few other items).
Poor building quality with very poor insulation( very hot during the summer and cold during the winter), aluminum windows which heat up during the summer.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

That during the summer it get to 40 degrees inside and insulation is very poor.

What is the best feature of your home:

The layout is good. Other flats in the area although they have the same surface area, they have a weird geometry and it is hard to make use of the surface area.

Outstanding development

There isn’t much in the area in terms of restaurants and nightlife so it is quite quiet and friendly. Yet it is close to 2 transport hubs so it is quite convenient to get to and from.

Please review your development:

As there isn’t much in the area, this lends scrutiny over the quality of the development and the facilities/amenities it offers. Therefore it is visible that the development is quite outstanding. The development is extremely clean (inside the buildings too), there is concierge and it is very safe to live in.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

When you are high up in the building the water pressure may not be so strong during rush hours like mornings before 8am and evenings after 6pm.

What is the best feature of your home:

The fascinating view and also the size of the balcony.
