Borough of Lewisham

Lewisham lies just a few miles south-east of Central London. A borough given a little more than just a fresh coat of paint in recent years. In fact, this area has seen plenty in the way of renovation. Including, a transformation of the town centre and a brand-new riverside park. As such, it moved at lightning-speed into the ‘up-and-comer’ category a couple of years back. Then, in the blink of an eye, it became highly sought-after, courtesy of its affordable homes and fantastic transport links. Read on to discover developments that are rated the best places to live in Lewisham. In addition, read reviews from residents who own or rent in Lewisham.

Cutting-edge bars and eateries

It might come as a surprise, but Lewisham embodies the sort of hipster cool more readily associated with places like Shoreditch and Hackney. The vibrant high streets are full of independent cafés, brunch pop-ups, and pocket-sized restaurants serving the A to Z of cuisines. After dark, there are lively pubs with on-stage happenings every weekend, plus a good clutch of nightclubs. One of the area’s most popular night-time haunts is Model Market, a street food fiesta that kicks off around 5pm on Fridays and Saturdays and goes on until late. Lip-smacking, around-the-world flavours here include succulent Argentinian meats, fiery Jamaican jerk chicken and thin and crispy Neapolitan pizzas.

Lewisham’s shopping scene

Lewisham’s daytime markets are just as good, and include Lewisham Farmers’ Market, Brockley Market, and Lewisham Open Market. Fresh flowers? Charcuterie? Pillow-soft donuts? All here. And if you’re more into high street brands, there’s a shopping mall in the middle of town packed with household names like M&S, Next and H&M.

Lewisham residents

Lewisham’s residents are spirited and diverse. Artsy types are flocking to the Deptford district. Families favour the roomy period homes in the Ladywell area, where’s there’s also a good supply of picnic and playing space thanks to Ladywell and Hilly Fields. Young professionals, meanwhile, love Lewisham Gateway – a regenerated neighbourhood of contemporary apartments, right by Lewisham DLR Station (direct links to London Bridge, Canary Wharf and Bank). All great places to rent in Lewisham. There’s also a number of students in the area, living in converted Victorian and Edwardian flats. Thanks to Goldsmiths, University of London in New Cross, there’s real demand here for accommodation for pupils – something worth remembering for those looking to invest.

Verdicts from HomeViews reviewers…
“Area is a Mecca for families and young couples given it’s good value and zone 3 location. Good cafes and small local shops around, though a little more limited in number compared to other areas. Zone 3 location with regular services to London Central stations.”

“If you’re a foodie, don’t miss Model Market, a night-time street food extravaganza. It’s also really easy to reach the renowned Greenwich Park from Lewisham. Wander the flower and herb gardens, stop for tea and cake at the Pavilion Café, and soak up the scenery from one of London’s best viewpoints.”

“Artsy, fun-loving Deptford (is) a south-east pocket of London packed with restaurants, bars and galleries. It’s close to historical Greenwich and foodie-haven Bermondsey, and has great transport links for getting further afield.”

Good but noisy outside

The local store and transport links are very good. However, the street is so noisy because there are so many restaurants on this street and the ventilation of those are not only very noise but also emits strange smell air. The window can not well prevent the noise.

Please review your development:

Crisp, modern design with a welcoming ambiance. Building management is responsive and efficient. Property management excels in providing prompt, courteous service. However, the noise from the street is a big problem and the window noise prevention should be improved.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I would like to know how noisy the street is especially in the evening.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

building management is responsive and efficient, ensuring a well-maintained property.

Bale and Anchor is Home away from Home.

bale an anchor is actually a luxury apartment with cute design. It is actually commutable to any workplace cause there’s two different train station close to the building which is just 5mins walk each. The market is 8mins walk and there’s Tesco downstairs alongside with a Tesco petro station. I really love this apartment man I would say it’s home away from home

Please review your development:

The management is always available. If any issues they ensure to attend to you immediately. The design, and facilities of the apartment if you ask me to rate it, I would give 100% cause it’s a very clean building. A very peaceful, clean and wonderful apartment that is commutable to both local shops and luxuries shops. With two closeby train stations and most of all there’s different bus stops just behind the building that run 24hours which made it perfect for me.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

The living room heater. Cause my living room heater isn’t hot enough as my living room is always cold but the rooms heater is working fine. I would really appreciate it if the management do something to it.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

I would say 99% out of 100%. Cause they always ensure to attend to the tenants as soon as they call

An added bonus to the above is everything else that is due to arrive soon! The gym, games room, cinema lounge, private dining rooms, yoga studio and much much more!

Should you need anything, please don’t hesitate to contact a member of the team!

B&A is close to necessities such as transport and grocery, plus the Lewisham High street is 15minutes away. It is very close to shops, but away from the “city noise”.

Please review your development:

Design is very “posh” and comfortable, we have not seen other facilities yet since it is still under construction. But, we are very excited for the game lounge, the gym and the theatre. Once outside the building, it feels fresh since it’s not a bustling street or busy road, it is great for a little walk.

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

I am not a fan of the automatic-lights on in the toilet and cupboard since it takes a few seconds to turn off, might save some energy when I can just turn it off when not in use.

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Very accommodating, explains inquiry clearly, and responds promptly.

Amazing local area that has its own life and culture, and is well connected to the city centre or other lovely attractions close by

Please review your development:

Facilities and management have been excellent since moving in. Price reflects the excellent living space that will only continue to grow as the community widens. The units are varied and suit all family or individuals, with key worker discounts for those who deserve it most

Please share one thing (or more) which you wish you had known before you moved in:

How much money I’d have to spend on prints to make the walls look beautiful. Worth it

How has the building management responded to any problems or issues you have raised:

Friendly and efficient management facilitate everything professionally and effectively
